The doctrines or teachings of the Jehovah Witnesses are thoroughly anti-Biblical especially concerning the Person of Christ. They teach that Christ was a created being based on a false interpretation of Colossians 1:15 and Revelation 3:14! Rutherford, the man who succeeded Russell the founder, wrote in his publication 'The Harp of God': 'The Logos was the first and only direct creation of Jehovah' even though the Bible clearly states the Lord Jesus Christ existed with the Father eternally and was Himself the Creator of all things in the same passage they falsely interpret. (Colossians 1:16-19). John 1:1-3 is another classic passage showing the Lord Jesus Christ's existence from the beginning with the Father also showing Him to be the very Creator Himself! The Jehovah Witnesses instead merely call Him 'a god' in their New World Translation which is conspicuously written in the 17th century King James English even though it was supposedly given to Russell by God during the 19th century.
Rutherford in another publication concerning the Person of Christ 'The Truth Shall Make You Free' stated: 'He is a mighty God but not the Almighty God who is Jehovah.' To this false teaching we say emphatically the Lord Jesus Christ always was, is, and always will be the one and only True God because the Word of God in so many places teaches this vital and foundational truth!
He is given Divine names in Isaiah 9:6, Matthew 1:23, and John 1:1 to mention just a few. He also is worshipped as God in Matthew 2:11, 14:33, 28:9; Luke 24:52; Hebrews 1:6; Philippians 2:10,11 & Revelation 5:8. He did and can perform works which only a Powerful Omnipotent God can perform, such as: forgiving sin (Mark 2:5-7); raising the dead (John 11:43); creating the world (Colossians 1:16); sustaining the world (Colosssians 1:17;Hebrews 1:2,3); performing countless miracles then and now (John 2:11)! His Divine attributes clearly display that He is God: He is Omnipotent (Matthew 28:18); Omnipresent (Matthew 28:20); Omniscient (John 21:17; 2:25; 16:30) and Eternal (John 1:1; Colossians 1:17; John 8:58).
The Jehovah Witnesses also state that the Lord Jesus Christ was just a man and died as any other man. The founder Russell declares in his 'Studies in the Scriptures' Vol. V, pg. 453 'The Man Jesus is dead, forever dead.' and in the same volume claims that the Lord Jesus Christ was originally a created angel known as Michael, the archangel. We reply to these claims that He indeed was equal with God, God was in Christ reconciling the world unto Himself, and although He was in the grave for a brief time, He triumphantly arose ever living to make intercession for us! (Philippians 2:5-11; II Corinthians 5:19; Hebrews 7:25) The Lord Jesus Christ was never an angel nor called Michael the archangel anywhere in Scripture! The angels themselves worship Him for He is so much better than the angels Hebrews 1:4-6 teaches us, thereby demonstrating that the teachings of the Jehovah Witnesses concerning the Person of Christ are erroneous.
In addition, they teach that the Hell of the Bible is merely the grave, therefore concluding there is no eternal punishment of the wicked! In a tract entitled 'Let God Be True' they falsely claim: 'It is so plain that the Bible hell is the tomb, the grave, that even an honest little child can understand it, but not the religious theologians.' They continue in the same publication saying: 'A fiery hell is a God-dishonouring religious doctrine.'
They also teach that all who die without Christ will get a second chance. Those that refuse this so-called second chance will be annihilated eliminating any possibility of judgment from God for their sin! The Lord Jesus Christ clearly taught that there will be an eternal place of punishment called Hell in numerous passages of Scripture including Matthew 10:28; Mark 9:43-47; and Luke 16:19-31 where He gave the very real account of 'a certain rich man' detailing the rich man's actual experience in the eternal place of torment called Hell! Denial never eliminates reality!! Denial only delays reality!
These are just a few of the major errors taught by the Jehovah Witnesses illustrating that man's cultic and/or Traditional ideas are as imperfect and erroneous as man himself and therefore we must ever hold to the eternal, unfailing Truth of the Word of God as the day of His Coming draws near.
